Last year ended with plenty of new releases to watch both streaming and in theatres.

Out of all the most watched films on Netflix in each country from December 26th 2022 to January 1 2023 Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery was the most watched in the majority of the countries within this time frame.

Box Office Mojo listed the top ten officially trending movies in December 2022. The interest the movies had in Google searches also reflects how well they did in theatres. According to estimates from Google Trends, “Avatar: The Way of Water” topped the global box office for the Christmas holiday for the second week in a row with $401,007,908 million, for a global total of $570,301,348 million. James Cameron is the director and producer of the 2022 American science fiction genre film Avatar: The Way of Water.

Avatar: The Way of Water was the highest-grossing movie of 2022. Using Google Trends we found data to see which provinces searched up this movie the most. We then created a Choropleth Map on Datawrapper to find Quebec searched up this movie the most.

Movie-goers are looking forward to superhero features this year.

Using the top 5 most searched movies of 2022 we found that three out of five of those movies were Marvel/DC films. We then took five upcoming Marvel/DC films and looked up the search popularity on Google Trends. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania took first place by far but could be because the movie is coming out February 17th. Second place is Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

Two of the most anticipated sequels were released towards the end of 2022.

When looking up the top five box office movies from the end of December 2022, we found that Avatar: The Way of Water was a significantly more popular search in Google than its competition. This reflects the commercial success it has had during release week. Although Black Panther: Wakanda forever was released in November, it remained a fairly popular search.

When looking at the data, we also observed that the biopic Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody didn’t have an autofill search until January 18th. This means the search trends for this movie are far more diverse because Google did not, or was unable to consolidate the search terms until very recently. The Whitney Houston biopic was a popular search, but under multiple queries, making it harder to track.
