Over the past year, you can only imagine the millions of searches for NHL players on Google. Thousands are playing in the league, but we’ve narrowed our data down to five players; Connor McDavid, Auston Matthews, Alex Ovechkin, Sidney Crosby, and Carey Price. All superstars, all known worldwide. Here’s how the data turned out for each player’s Google search in Canada.
Connor McDavid: The Edmonton Oilers captain is without a doubt the most skilled player in the league right now. There is often conversation that he has now surpassed Sidney Crosby as the world’s best player. That may be true, but, he shares the lead in searches with five provinces/territories. In the entire country, McDavid is searched the most in; Alberta, British Columbia, Northwest Territories, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. This comes as no surprise given that he is such a surreal talent and is all over highlight recaps.
Auston Matthews: The California native and Toronto Maple Leafs superstar leads the NHL in goals this year with 32 in only 40 games. The world’s best goal scorer has broken out the past two seasons, and is only getting better. Along with his great goal scoring abilities, his search numbers are also impressive. Matthews leads the way with five provinces/territories, the same as Connor McDavid. Matthews is on top in; Ontario, Yukon, Newfoundland & Labrador, P.E.I., New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia. In Ontario, Matthews has 53% of searches as he is the face of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Alex Ovechkin: The captain of the Washington Capitals, is arguably the greatest goal-scorer in NHL history. The Russian sniper is currently alone in sixth place on the all-time scoring list (728) as he continues to chase Wayne Gretzky’s record of 894. Ovechkin captured the Stanley Cup back in 2018, and over the past three seasons, he and his Capitals haven’t slowed down. Known for his scoring abilities and entertaining presence on and off the ice, it’s surprising that he isn’t searched the most in any provinces or territories.
Sidney Crosby: The three time Stanley Cup champion and Pittsburgh Penguins captain, is by far the most searched player on this list. The Canadian olympic hero is still very popular, despite his play slowing down a tad. One of the NHL’s greatest talents ever, Crosby only leads searches in Nunavut, with a total of 31%.
Carey Price: The 2014-2015 NHL MVP will go down as one of the best goalies to ever play. Although Price is a one in a million talent and very well known, he is not searched nearly as much as Matthews or McDavid. He only has the province of Quebec with 28% of searches, but he leads the Montreal Canadiens franchise goalie stats in wins (360) and games played (705).
