The Sting men’s basketball team beat the Algonquin Wolves 72-60, winning their seventh straight victory and improving to 10-4.
The Sting’s offence was the story of the game, especially Jerron Alexander who led the team with a double double, 16 points and 12 rebounds. He was also named the “Athlete of the Week” for the second time. Alexander said he understands the game better than last season and believes his team has what it takes to win this year’s championship.
Alexander is in his second season with the team. In an interview for Green’s Gamecast he said his approach is different this season, “I’m more relaxed and try not to overthink the games too much.”
Coach Jay McNeilly says it has paid off. After the win over Algonquin he said, “Well I thought the guys battled hard including Jerron who had a stellar game for us. They’re a physical team and it took us a little time to match their physicality but once we were able to do that we got some key rebounds in the second half that I thought gave us a little bit of a cushion.”
After a slow start to the season Alexander is excited about the winning streak, “It’s been a great turnaround, and I appreciate it. I’m just looking to go far with this team. I know what we can do. I know we can probably win it all.”
The next game for the Seneca Sting is against the Georgian Grizzlies as Alexander looks to continue his hot streak in the next game.
