Coping up with Covid-19

by Jasmine Gill

My family and I are struggling to cope up with this pandemic. Being an international student has been an obstacle of its own, surviving here away from family is difficult. I have to look for my health myself, yet trying to live peacefully. Back in my home country, India, everything is closed, my family is in a lockdown situation, so they have also not able to help me financially. However, we are there for each other emotionally. Apart from this, I have personally got a lot closer to not only them but my friends back home. Technology is helping me from not falling apart. Social media is also helping some to stay connected. My cousins and I play online games together, do video calls all the time.
I have also made friends here in Canada, which are not less than family to me. Most of us have lost their jobs due to the outbreak. My roommate has a job, though. She works part-time in Popeye’s. Every time she goes to work, I laugh around making jokes to her about the pandemic, hiding my fears for her health. But, we have also come much closer to each other, mentally, emotionally. I have learned many new cooking recipes staying home. We are always experimenting with things and often create some cool stuff out of waste. She is also away from her family. And all we have is each other, and are more like family.
