Seneca student Logan Shave says the cost of his car insurance has skyrocketed since coming to Ontario.

“I’ve been driving accident free for over a decade and still pay $15o (per month) more than what I would pay back in Alberta”.

Although Ontario is reported to have the least amount of reported accidents compared to all other provinces, the province has the highest auto insurance rates in all of Canada, according to the  Auditor General’s report.   Bonnie Lysyk says that between 2017 and 2021, the average premium for private passenger automobile insurance increased by almost 14% to $1,642. The report concludes that the Ministry of Finance has not helped the cost of automobile insurance for Ontarians, deciding for most drivers to consider commuting and avoiding these high monthly prices.

Additionally, Lysyk discovered that auto insurance rates in Ontario vary so widely that, for example, a driver in London, Ont., would pay $1,200 a year. Still, in Brampton, Ont, drivers would pay $3,350, with the high fraud rate with high accidents.

Nancy Cheema, also a Seneca student who lives in Brampton, says to pay monthly for her 2010 Mazda 3,  costs over $300.

“I have a clean driving record, and I have had my G license for the past five years, and I’m still paying $330 for a sedan which is outrageous.

The Journalism student has found it difficult to find a better price for her car insurance and is getting sick and tired of paying so much.

Shave the television broadcasting student doesn’t drive his 2007 Volkswagen Rabbit daily. He prefers public transit for his daily commute.  He uses his car for errands like grocery shopping.  It doesn’t help with his insurance costs, but it saves on gas and parking.
