As the united states election draws near it seems too close to call, so close that we probably won’t know what the results are till a couple days after November 5th. But regardless of who wins the election, the heat on both candidates is turning up and everyone can feel it. For Kalama Harris’s team, they made a Fortnite Map called Freedom Town, USA which seems many people including myself really did not expect. On the other hand the last couple of weeks for the Donald Trump campaign have been weird to say the least, it all started when Trump was seen working at McDonalds.
While unexpected its not completely out of left field to see a politician working at a fast food joint or handing out food while campaigning, but it was followed by the company saying they didn’t invite Trump to work at McDonalds. However, since McDonalds franchises their restaurants, they didn’t need to invite him, but they still spun the story as showing that McDonalds was present in modern American culture. This followed a post saying Trump boosted McDonalds stock by 200 percent, which was fact-check by Reuters and was found that the stock actually dropped 5 percent over the next three days after Trump’s visit. However this is more likely related to the cases of E. coli that killed one person and left 50 others ill, so its hard to tell if Trump had any effect on the stock.
Jump to this Sunday where the story really began to pick up. During a Trump rally a comedian Tony Hinchcliffe called Puerto Rico a “Floating Island of Garbage in the middle of the Ocean”, sparking a wave of backlash. For people who don’t know, Puerto Rico is part of the United States but sits in a weird spot, Puerto Ricans have full U.S. citizenship yet Puerto itself has no representation in the house of representees, the senate or the electoral college (which elects the president). However, Puerto Ricans living the mainland U.S. can still vote like any other U.S. citizen and there are many influential figures in the U.S. of Puerto Rican descent.
Celebrates such as Jennifer Lopez, Luis Fonsi and Bad Bunny are some of the Puerto Ricans who have endorsed Kamala Harris in response to these comments from the Trump Rally. Trump and his team immediately tried to distance themselves from the comments. Trump’s campaign spokesperson said after the comments “this joke does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign.” But the story turned around again when U.S. President Joe Biden preceded to say after the rally “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters,” which he later tried to clarify that he was talking about the demonization of Latinos but Trump seems to already have jumped on these comments.
After a rally on Wednesday, Trump was seen walking out of his private plane and after talking to reporters, got into a garbage truck. Trump continued to distance himself from Hinchcliffe saying he didn’t know who he was other then being a comedian, that Hinchcliffe statements were his own and “He’s a comedian, what can I tell you. I know nothing about him.” Other comments he made were saying the Garbage truck was “in honor of Kamala and Joe Biden” and “I love Puerto Rico and Puerto Rico loves me” while sitting in the garbage truck.
Overall, while we are five days away from election night, both candidates are probably hoping that as the heat turns up, any shake up that happen during the race negatively affect the other side.
