Journalism students at Seneca College came together and worked on a project comparing subway vs car going home from York University subway station. Classes were divided into three different teams and traveled to three subway destinations. On the day of the project, the teams got together and planned out how they were going to start and meet up after going to their subway stop. The three subway stops chosen were the Sheppard-Yonge station, Bloor-Yonge station and Dufferin station. After completing the project students found that traveling by car was faster than by the subway 2 out of 3 times.

The subway and car do have its advantages and disadvantages. One of the advantages of traveling by subway is that it’s much cheaper and you are saving a lot of money. Using a presto card costs you only $3 of fare to take the subway and it is also environmentally friendly. A disadvantage may be that you may get delays on the subway and you would have to wait until the delay gets cleared. An advantage of commuting by car is that you can get to places faster and you get to have your own space while driving instead of having to deal with a packed subway. One disadvantage for commuting by car is that you have to pay so much for gas and insurance. Which do you prefer more driving or taking the subway? And why?

Team 3’s car team Maria, Ahtisham, and Nivetha were going to Sheppard-Yonge station and overall they didn’t experience much traffic while they were going to their subway station.  Once they left York University subway station they didn’t experience any traffic going on Steeles Avenue and switching to Yonge Street. Maria, Ahtisham, and Nivetha got to Sheppard-Yonge station in 25 mins and that beat the subway team Stephen and Cher by 15 mins. While they were waiting for their teammates to join them, they were looking for parking. Finding parking around Yonge and Sheppard was difficult because most of the parking places asked them to pay. In the end, they found a parking spot which did ask them to pay but they didn’t pay because who was actually going to pay. They are students and they have tuition to pay for, so who has the money to pay for parking.

Team 3’s subway team Stephen and Cher took the subway and left at the same time as their car team. On the subway, they didn’t deal with any deals and got to Sheppard West station in about 10 mins. Once they switched to the 84 Sheppard West bus was when they experienced some traffic which lasted for about 5 mins. The bus they were on was packed too and Stephen and Cher had to stand their whole ride. They reached Sheppard station in 40 mins.

On their way driving to Sheppard-Yonge station, Reporters Maria, Ahtisham, and Nivetha didn’t come across much traffic. Their drive from Keele and Steeles was smooth going to Yonge Street.

Rush hour is usually from 3 pm and later, but Reporters Maria, Ahtisham, and Nivetha didn’t have to deal with any traffic issues. On both sides, traffic was moving smoothly and even buses were going on their normal pace.

The traffic was looking good once Team 3’s car team Maria, Ahtisham, and Nivetha reached Young and Sheppard.

It only took Team 3’s car team 25 mins to reach their destination which was pretty quick because Google Maps predicted that their drive would take about 36 mins.

After both teams met up, they agreed that the car team won and succeeded reaching Sheppard station without having to deal with traffic and any delays. On the other hand, the subway team dealt with some delay and it took them longer to reach Sheppard station. Taking the subway is cheaper because it only cost $3.25 per person, $3.00 only if you are a presto card user. One problem taking the subway is that you have to deal with delays sometimes. Driving the car is not cheap because you have to at least put $30 worth of gas and that at least lasts you for about three days. Overall, Seneca students had a great time completing this project with their class. Do you prefer driving to school or taking the subway? And why?
