Video game movies continue to be all the rage. From Mario to Sonic, to Uncharted, it’s been hit after hit. Hollywood has been having massive success with making movie adaptations of their video games. Next up on the radar is Zelda. Based off the juggernaut video game franchise The Legend Of Zelda, the movie will be a live-action adaptation produced by Nintendo.
The official announcement came from the new Nintendo Today app which is featured on the App Store, and Google Play. The app launched the same day the movie announcement was made. The Nintendo Today is meant to be a new platform to entice Nintendo fans on news regarding movies and video games. There couldn’t have been a more exciting announcement for fans to kick off this new platform. This is the second video game property from Nintendo to be adapted into a movie. Nintendo previously had a massive success with The Super Mario Bros movie, which grossed over $1.3 billion at the box office in 2023. That movie was the second highest grossing movie of 2023. It is also one of the most successful movies ever made. It was inevitable that Nintendo would want to green lit more movies based on their video game franchises. Although an interesting choice to go live action rather than animated. Especially considering Super Mario adapted as an animated movie was so successful.
No casting news has been made about the live action Zelda movie. The movie has been in the works since 2023. Although now the movie has been given an official release date. It’s set to release in theatres March 26th, 2027. That’s Easter weekend 2027. Easter weekend has proven to be a very successful release slot for movies. The original Super Mario opened to $146.4 million domestic. Globally after the 5 day opening weekend the movie had made 377 million worldwide. The sequel to Super Mario Bros movie is even using that same release date ext year. That movie will release April 3rd, 2026. Both the Super Mario sequel and Zelda hope to capitalize on that with the same release date.
It begs the question, what video game properties should be adapted into movies next? The Super Mario franchise has tons of characters in the movie that have their own spinoff video game. Perhaps we could see spinoff movies of those characters, and their video games. There is also the Kirby franchise, and the Nintendo crossover franchise Super Smash Bros. Perhaps those video game properties could be the next adaptations to be made.
