Welcome to the Black history month

Welcome to February! This month represents all the suffering, struggle, and under-representation that the black community had through the years.

Called the Black history month, Toronto became the first municipality in Canada to proclaim this Black History Month in 1979 but it has received official recognition from the House of Common in 1995 in Canada following a movement introduced by the first African Canadian woman elected to Parliament, Jean Augustine. Retired MP overcame hurdles to secure Black History Month designation | CBC Radio

This month is an opportunity to learn the history and to better understand the struggle that Black people face in Canada and in the world. During this month, many events are organized in the country and the COVID does not stop the event organizers to set up an activity for this significant month. Camara Chambers is the organizer of the events “Let’s Hike T.O” that offer a special walk sharing the stories and achievements of Black Canadians, “Let’s Hike T.O. is a hiking community open to everyone with a focus on engaging people of color, newcomers and all young adults aged 20-40. We started in July 2021 and have led over 30 hikes since and engaged over 400 people in our activities. We aim to bring diversity principles to outdoor spaces during the Black history month”

Black history month events and festivities that honor the legacy of Black Canadians gained more importance through the year there’s been a rising interest in our work since we started. And black history month hikes are one of the most popular, second only to indigenous history hikes. I would expect the rise in interest is due to the murder of George Floyd and the awakening around anti-black racism.” shared Camara Chambers.

Everyone is welcome to participate in those events that can help to recognize the commitment to equal rights in Canada.
