Tron Returns After 15 Years

After 15 years Tron is back. This time starring Jared Leto as one of the video game characters. Although instead of us going to the world of Tron like past entires, this time there coming to this world. Jeff Bridges will return as Kevin Flynn. Evan Peters, Greta Lee, and Jodie Turner Smith will also join the cast. It is unknown whether or not Garret Hedlund and Olivia Wilde will reprise their roles from Tron Legacy.

The original 1982 Tron film starring Bridges was a moderate hit. The film grossed $50 million on a $17 million dollar budget. Its 2010 sequel Tron Legacy was a commercial success. Tron Legacy grossed $409 million on a $170 million dollar budget. The movie received mixed reviews though. Some people loved it, while others hated it. The Rotten Tomatoes score reflects that with a fifty-one percent critics score, and sixty-four percent audience score. The de-aged CGI villain Clue played by Jeff Bridges was panned for poor effects. The script of the film was also criticized by some. Although the special effects in the scenes with the air crafts, and light bikes received praise. Daft Punk infamously composed the soundtrack for that movie. Love or hate Tron Legacy, the soundtrack is phenomenal and a staple of that franchise. Sadly Daft Punk will not be returning to compose this new movie. Instead they will be replaced by Nine Inch Nails.

New 'Tron' Movie Sets Filming Start Date

Although the reception to Tron Legacy was mixed, the world of Tron created in it was praised. Many felt as if the movie made them feel like they were in the real world of Tron. They were memorized by the special effects, and world created in that movie. In fact the Tron ride in the Disney Parks is extremely popular. The ride is called Tron Lightcycle Run, and is featured in Magic Kingdom at Disney World, and Shang Hai Disneyland. This has helped earn Tron Legacy a cult following after the past 15 years.

In fact the ride has been so popular at the Disney theme parks, that’s how this new Tron Movie got made. Disney wanted to capitalize on the success of the ride.

What Took Disney So Long To Make Tron Ares?

While Tron Legacy was a success, it wasn’t as big of a success as Disney expected it to be. It had an animated show Tron Uprising which took place between the first and second movie. Unfortunately the show was not a success, and was cancelled after one season. In 2015 a sequel to Tron Legacy was in active development. Hedlund, Wilde, and Bridges were all set to return. Unfortunately those plans were scrapped after another futuristic Disney sci movie Tomorrowland bombed. However plans for a third Tron movie resumed in 2017. A movie more along the lines of a reboot with Jared Leto were what was known about the project. Three years went by with no news until Garth Davis was hired to direct the movie in summer 2020. In March 2022 when Leto was promoting Morbius, he confirmed the movie was still happening. By January 2023, Davis had left the project as director. He was replaced by Joaching Ronning as director. Ronning is most known for his work directing Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man Tell No Tales, and Maleficent Mistress of Evil. Both movies were panned by critics. Although Pirates was a box office hit, while Maleficent bombed back in 2019.

Tron Ares was originally designed as reboot back in 2017. Having said that, the movie has gone through many changes over the years. One of the only things remaining intact was Leto staring in it. It’s been confirmed that Tron Ares will be a standalone sequel to Tron Legacy. As previously confirmed, franchise veteran Jeff Bridges will be returning after all. Tron Ares will take place in the same world as the previous Tron movies. It just won’t be extremely reliant on those movies. It will have a new story, with mostly new characters. The lead character played by Leto has been compared to Pinnocchio. Although not much is known about his character, he will be one of the video game characters who comes to the real world, and wants to be a real human. After all he isn’t the first video game character in the movie to want that. The previous movie Tron Legacy ended with Quora played Olivia Wilde escaping into the real world, with the protagonist Sam Flynn played by Garret Hedlund.

Will Tron Ares Be Successful?

The box office prospects of Tron Ares can go either way. If the success of the ride at the theme parks is any indication, it will be a huge hit. Having said that, that may not translate to strong ticket sales. The word of mouth from critics and audiences will be essential to this movies success. That will really help determine if audiences decide to see this in theatres. Audiences are more picky about what they see in theatres than they ever have been. With so many accustomed to waiting for digital at home, this movie really needs to show audiences that its worth going to see in theatres. Video game movies like The Super Mario Bros Movie and the recent Minecraft have been huge hits.

Perhaps Tron Ares can follow suit in those movies. Those movies didn’t receive good reviews from critics, but audiences loved both movies. Having said that, those movies are based off huge video game brands. Tron Ares will be much more reliant on positive word of mouth. The movie also has a very interesting release date being in October. One might think a movie of this scale might be better suited for a summer or holiday release. Having said that, that might have been to avoid competition with other big releases. When Tron Ares releases in October, there’s no real competition it will be facing. If word of mouth is good, it could potentially enjoy all of October as the biggest movie. Wicked For Good, and Zootopia 2 will be huge conteders at the box office. Although those movies release in November. Tron Ares has more than a month that it will be in theatres, before those movies are released.
