A Minecraft Movie continues to smash records at the box office. After opening with the biggest opening for a video game movie of all time, the film held strong in its second weekend. A Minecraft Movie grossed $80 million in its second weekend. That put its worldwide gross at $564.6 million, in just its second weekend. The film was originally expected to only open with $60 million. The walk up ticket sales played a huge part in the movies success. The trailers for the film were bashed online, with some even rooting for the movie to fail. Unlike recent family movies that had negative course online like Snow White, a Minecraft Movie prevailed. No matter how hard anyone tried, the movie is a massive box office success.
The social media posts online of audience reactions have done half the promotions for this movie. Viral videos of audiences cheering in the theatre, when references from the video game are featured in the movie. It’s what helped the movie hold up so strong in its second weekend. It created this sense of urgency for audiences to go again, and relive that experience. To add on to it many people went to see it for the first time this weekend, after hearing about the theatre experience.
What Does This Mean For The Minecraft Movie?
Blockbuster movies holding up strong in their second weekend is a great sign for this movies performance at the box office. Especially considering that there are no big movies opening that could rival it, until May 2nd with Marvels Thunderbolts. There’s Ryan Cooglers Horror movie Sinners, and Ben Afflecks The Accountant 2. Having said that, neither of those movies are expected to impact Minecrafts performance. Both movies are completely different genres, and appeal to completely different audience demographics. Audiences going to see Sinners, or The Accountant 2 likely won’t see A Minecraft Movie as well. This makes Minecrafts chance of hitting a billion all the more likely.
What Movies Opened This Weekend?
Despite A Minecraft Movies massive hold in its second weekend, four movies opened this weekend. Though none were a match for Minecraft. The first movie that opened was faith based animated movie The King of Kings. The faith based movie opened in 2nd with $19 million. The studio behind it Angel Studios is the same behind summer 2023 film The Sound Of Freedom. The film has grossed $23.8 million on just a budget of $5 million. Though the animated film is already a huge success, it will be interesting to see how the film will hold up going into the Easter weekend. It seems there were room for two family movies this weekend. Minecraft, and The King of Kings didn’t effect one another at the box office.
Amateur staring Academy Award winner Rami Malek also opened. In the film Malek plays a CIA cryptographer and vigilante who seeks revenge on those responsible for the death of his wife. The film also stars Lawrence Fishbourne, and Rachel Brosnahan. Though Malek and Fishbourne are well established actors in Hollywood, many will recognize Brosnahan as Lois Lane in this summers upcoming Superman Movie. The film opened in 3rd place with $15 million. Universal also released a new thriller movie Drop. The film stars Meghann Fahy, and Brandon Sklenar. Fahy is most known for her performance in season 2 of the hit series The White Lotus. Fahy even was nominated for a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Performing Actress in a drama series. Sklenar is most known for his work in the show 1923, and last summers It Ends With Us. Also known as the movie behind the Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni lawsuit.
Unfortunatley that didn’t seem to be enough to bring audiences in. Drop came in 5th this weekend with a weak $7.5 million. It is likely Drop will hit digital in less than 3 weeks. The fourth movie that opened was war film Warefare. The film stars Will Poulter, and Joseph Quinn. Warefare opened in third with $8.3 million.
Snow White Hit A New Low This Weekend
While the box office slumber has been awaken with Minecraft, the same can’t be said for Disneys Snow White remake. The film came in 8th in it’s fourth weekend at the box office. It grossed a sleepy $2.8 million this weekend. That puts its total globally at $181.6 million. For reference the movie is made on a budget of $270 million. With the expensive ad campaign, the movies break even point was $675 million. Snow White clearly isn’t going to come anywhere close to that. It surely will go down as one of the biggest movie flops of all time.
