Thumbp is joining a competitive market in the shampoo business

By: Logan Bennett

Shampoo often comes in plastic packaging and uses harsh and sometimes toxic chemicals that have also been known to cause eye and skin irritation, hair damage, and other health complications. Thumbp is trying to solve this problem by offering a more natural and sustainable product that is better for your health and hair. The creator of Thumbp Fred Brumwell started this company in 2022.

The hair care market is riddled with competition from big players Dove and Herbal Essences but Brumwell is not shy about the competitive market “we’re different because of the quality of our product and we offer a more sustainable product.”

But the teenagers and young people Brumwell is trying to reach are unwilling to buy his product at an expensive price tag of $34.95 for one bottle. Brumwell doesn’t back down from the price and isn’t hesitant to defend it “I can justify this price because there are similar products on the market that aren’t organic ,vegan, gluten free in the market place”.

According to National Library of Medicine, Gluten free shampoo is better for you as it can help promote a healthy scalp by reducing irritation and inflammation and help reduce skin irritation and inflammation caused by gluten sensitivity or intolerance.

HELIX was a big part to helping him get his company up and running with Chris Dudley giving him advice during the program to perfect his product for the marketplace.

“I thank Chris for all of his help during the HELIX program with getting my product perfected for the market and narrowing my market audience.”

Brumwell stated that Thumbp wasn’t his first company but his third that he founded.  Brumwell’s other two companies offer strategic planning for companies and relationship management as he finds new ways to have bosses connect with his employees. Brumwell stated  “This is my third company that I started the other two were in the consulting companies .

The packaging is part of the product.  The bottle gives tips to young people hygiene tips. Thumbp labels are the secret key to their teaching methods, designed to help each young person figure out the right amount of product to use for them.

On the back of every bottle “the kids help phone” number and website is listed for the people who need the help. The kids help phone number 1-800-668-6868 and the website is kidhelpphone.ca.  One dollar of every bottle sold is donated to the kids help phone organization.  Brumwell explains the connection to the kids help phone “There’s a benefit that the people close to me have gotten from the kid help phone.” He added that he wanted to make a meaningful difference in the world while creating a good product for anyone to use.

While Thumbp is still just starting to grow Brumwell is looking to hire more students and offer them a job at his company

Brumwell looks up to a lot of mentors including a mentor named Dave “I looked up to my mentor Dave for advice on the marketing of the products. I still go to him for new ways to market my product tailored to the younger audience. ”
