Peng Shuai, a professional Women’s Tennis Player, mysteriously disappeared (when?) after making an accusation of sexual Assault against a former Vice premier of China on social media. Peng s  the first Chinese woman to be #1 ranked in the world by the ATP in doubles.

Peng posted her accusation on social media, using the hashtag #metoo, the movement to raise awareness of Gender Equality, and Sexual harassment.  Her post stated the Sexual assault happened during an affair with former Vice Premiere Zhang Gaoli, which was consensual other wise.

Her post was taken down shortly after it was posted.  Also, the Chinese Authorities even blocked out Internet searches with the word “Tennis.”  Peng then mysteriously disappeared from the public.

A few days after the disappearance, a letter  was released by Peng stating “everything was fine” which raised even more concern about her ability to speak freely.

Peng has been seen in public since the disappearance

She recently appeared on a video call interview with the international Olympic Committee.  Peng told the committee she is safe, and then thanked them for caring about her well being.

Peng was also seen at a youth Tennis tournament, as pictures of her were released by the Chinese state media. They showed Peng signing giant tennis balls for youth, smiling and waving, appearing to be in good spirits.

However, there is still major concern for her well being, including her peer, superstar Tennis player Serena WIlliams “This must be investigated and we must not stay silent. Sending love to her and her family during this incredibly difficult time.“

Peng’s statement was brave, as Chinese citizens are often jailed for embarrassing, or for affecting an (criticizing/demeaning) the image of someone of that political stature, even if her claim was legitimate, and proven.

A statement was released in English by The Chinese State of Television,  that Shuai retracted her claim.  This caused some debate, as some question if Shuai’s claim was legit,  or if she is being forced to pull back her accusations.

With the 2022 winter olympics coming up in Beijing,  there are talks about potentially boycotting.  The Biden administration said that they are considering a “diplomatic boycott” which is something the US hasn’t done since 1980 in Moscow.

On December 1st, the WTA suspended all of their events in China, until Pengs safety was guaranteed.

Peng’s safety has still not been guaranteed by Chinese Authorities, and this story is updating, as the search for Peng Shuai continues
