The Sting Rally Late to Beat the Colts

By Ziyad Benhaddad

After losing the opener, the Sting were looking forward to bouncing back against the Colts. A shortened schedule has made every game increasingly important. An 0-2 hole to start the campaign would’ve been an insurmountable challenge for any team.

It didn’t look promising to start as they were down by 11 at the end of the first quarter. The Sting rallied back by winning the second quarter by 15 to take the lead at halftime. Jordan Anderson and Tyrone Cunningham caught fire, both were responsible for 17 of the 25 points in the quarter. The Sting was very efficient to end the half. Anderson hit a corner three with 4:43 remaining in the second quarter, which helped ignite a 24-3 run by the Sting as they took a 4 point lead to the locker room. Although efficiency was displayed on the offensive, Jay Mcnelly wasn’t happy with its counterpart. The head coach of the Seneca Sting explained during the halftime interview that they were trying to work on defensive rotations as the game goes along. He believed the Colts made some tough shots and that it will level out. ‘’They made some key shots within those defensive rotations that we wanted to work, so we’ll continue to focus on that and see if we can get them out their rhythm.

Colts had the largest lead in the first quarter but ever since then, it stayed a nip-tuck game as 5 points separated both teams after the third quarter. Moses Orange and Covaun Armstrong for the Colts were the main contributors as they kept Centennial in the game by the 4th quarter. Centennial shot much better from the three-point line as it was 28% to just 18% for the Sting. A 20-13 advantage on second-chance opportunities for Seneca was the deciding factor in this one.

Anderson, who’s been so reliable for the Sting in the past years, went 3-16 from the three-point line but two of his makes came at the most crucial time in the 4th quarter to bring home the victory for the Sting. One that gave a 67-66 lead late in the fourth quarter. Anderson and Cunningham were the main contributors for Seneca, both combining for 14 points each. Their teammate, Rashewan Washington, was arguably the best player on the floor as he almost racked up a triple-double. Washington went for 11 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Chauncy Babb-Williams provided a much-needed spark off the bench as well, he finished with 12 points and 8 rebounds.

The Sting will look to make 2 in a row, as they face Georgian on Wednesday. Georgian has opened the season 2-0, another tough test for Seneca at 7 PM Est.
