The Shift in Zahra

Zahra Aldunia is a woman who was in the spot many of us find ourselves. A situation where we are dead set on one path; a path we believe we are meant to be on, and then a life experience shakes us up and takes us down a new road. Ever since she was a young girl, Zahra has had a passion for social justice issues. This was ignited in her early on when she moved to Canada at the tender age of three. Moving from one country to another combined with her curiosity around how she could positively impact the world, lead her to want to become a lawyer.

While in college she attended, Zahra attended a supreme justice court trial and became aware of how slow and biased the social justice system is and can be. This situation brought up a lot of hard questions that she had to ask herself about her future and the direction she wanted it to go in. She made a conscious decision at that point in time to turn her energy from changing the system by becoming a lawyer, to changing the system by creating a platform for herself to bring light into these dark arenas of our social justice system.

As Zahra stated in our interview: “I want to control; not be controlled by the media”

That scary and uncertain shift we all experience is ultimately what has lead her to where she is now. She is now in the multi-platform journalism program at Seneca College where she hopes to create a platform where she can marry her passion for social justice issues with her burning desire to make a positive impact on the world around her. She is proof that while sometimes going down a new road that we did not foresee for ourselves can bring up a lot of feelings around uncertainty, that ultimately it is those moments that take us down a path that is the most genuine to us.
