Keeping the Music Going

Here you will have approx. 200 words of text setting up the story. Approx. 1:30-1:58 story length. It is a subject driven ENG with no reporter involvement. It explores what the subject is actively doing through their music to conquer COVID-19 and his/her motive for doing so. Example:

Like many bands in 2020, the Arkells found themselves at home and longing for the excitement of playing music for others. They knew they weren't the only ones feeling the isolation and wanted to bring people together in the same way they always have- through music. With their "Flatten the Curve" music classes, they taught viewers how to play some of their popular hits over Instagram live.

Through the Years

Here you will have approx. 200+ words to setup this story. This is your subject’s rise to fame montage. It is a slide-show of your subject’s climb in the music industry. Each photo will be accompanied by a short caption. You can use Premier Pro to create this montage. Each slide should be short - up to 10 seconds max. Credit all your photos. Most will be from other sources.

Much of the history of the Arkells links back to their hometown of Hamilton, Ontario. Not only was the band named after a street there, they also include references to the city in song titles and lyrics. Now five albums and two EPs into their career, the band has evolved together from their days at McMaster University to their most recent album recorded during the pandemic.

The Story Behind the Song

Approx. 100+ words setting up your episode. Run time: approx. 5:00 minutes. This piece will have the subject discussing his/her favourite song and the meaning behind its development -- with explanation of specific sound/lyrical elements of the song, as it progresses.
Max Kerman, Mike DeAngelis, Nick Dika, Tim Oxford, and Anthony Carone join Alan Cross to share their story about their music, their friendship, and their growth. Hear how it all started in university, when some serendipity brought them together and how their love of Hamilton and making music together grew from there.

Giving Back

Source two previously published, public, social media posts from Instagram or Twitter. Must include content that pushes the story forward and provides a fresh “lens” into a career highlight/turning point or behind the scenes moment in the musician’s career. If the artist is not on social media, the post can be of an external association/fan/mentor that was sharing related content.  Includes text setup.

Even though getting back to the music has been important for the band during COVID-19, they've also focused on giving back as much as they can. Whether it's through their virtual music classes, or supporting local music programs by providing new instruments- the band has never shied away from supporting causes they believe in.

Community Support

Create a question that allows audiences to engage with the story. The question should have 2-4 options as an answer. Tweet the poll from @SayNewsNow Twitter account and embed in the story. Tweet should also (briefly) include any necessary context (ahead of the question) so it can “stand alone” on social media, without additional explanation.
