A gentle way to say goodbye... through shooting stars and sustainable space memorials.

For centuries, we have said goodbye the same way: burials, gravestones, quiet gatherings. But a growing number of people are rethinking that final step. Not because they fear it, but because they want it to mean more.

That iss where Stardust comes in.

Founded by aerospace engineer Yin-Hua Hsu, Stardust is a memorial service that carries a small portion of ashes into Earth’s orbit. After spending time circling the planet, the capsule re-enters the atmosphere, burning up like a meteor. A visible shooting star in the night sky.

It is a poetic gesture. But also, a practical one.

Traditional burials use land, cement, and chemical treatments. Even cremation has its environmental cost. Stardust, on the other hand, uses leftover space on existing rocket launches, meaning no extra fuel or emissions. Once the capsule re-enters, it vaporizes entirely, leaving no debris behind. Just light.

The idea came from personal experience. After the passing of both his grandparents, Yin-Hua felt disconnected from the formality of traditional ceremonies. He wasn’t looking to replace mourning—just to offer an alternative. One that felt more personal. More meaningful. And in many ways, more alive.

Now supported by the Seneca Helix innovation program, Stardust is moving from concept to launchpad. Its next steps include expanding access and developing capsule designs that may even help remove space debris during re-entry. Turning a farewell into a small act of restoration.

Still, the core of Stardust remains simple, remembrance doesn’t have to be heavy. It can be light. Fleeting. And still unforgettable.

Some will always choose a gravestone. Others might find comfort in a streak of light across the sky.

For those who look up, Stardust offers something rare…
A goodbye that feels a little less like an ending and a little more like wonder.
