Crimes Lowered During Pandemic

Toronto Police confirm crimes have gone down since the start of the Covid-19 Pandemic in March 2020. The area of crime that remained unchanged was homicides. The majority of the crimes taking place are people against people, but break and enter have also gone down. Robberies hit an all-time low in the past four years with the exception of robberies taking place in businesses. There was an increase in robberies against businesses resulting in 6.4% uptick while financial institutions saw a steep decrease in robberies with -20.2%.  Sunday was the day of the week that saw the lowest amount of crimes, resulting in less than 5000 incidents in 2020.

A spokesperson from Toronto Police, Meaghan Grey says, ” police divisions are asked to monitor various locations that have closed businesses.”

This can help contribute to lower crime rates as police presence has increased. Grey says there are tools available to protect business workers.
