The personal information of a number of patients was stolen during a recent cyberattack against health authorities in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The information taken in the midst of the October 30th attack includes patients’ names, addresses, health-care numbers, and reasons for visiting health-care facilities.

According to the government, hackers are behind the attack, which has reduced medical services in the province for nearly two weeks. This is  the third health authority in Newfoundland and Labrador where information has been stolen by these same attackers.

Health Minister John Haggie says an investigation is ongoing, though government officials are refusing to expose what kind of attack occurred and if the hackers are asking for money.

A report by Protenus shows the number of hacking incidents reported in healthcare in the United States climbed for the fifth straight year in 2020. The incidents jumped 42% in 2020, which executives of the company who did the research suspects to be connected to COVID-19.
