GO buses will no longer come onto campus, and students protest decision

Go buses will stop coming to York campus in January.

Some Seneca and York University students are unhappy. Over 9,300 of them, to be more precise. GO Transit has announced it will stop dropping off students on the York U Keele campus as of January 5th, 2019. That affects routes 25F, 45, 46, 47, 48, 51, 52 and 54.

The closest bus stop will be the at the 407 Highway subway station and bus terminal. While the GO bus fare will remain the same, the students would either have to walk 35-40 minutes to campus or take the subway – two stops, about 10 minutes if there are no delays – to York University station. That means an extra $1.50 each way for the subway ride.

York University groups have joined forces to put forward a petition requesting that YRT/Viva come back to campus, and TTC and Go Transit to maintain stops within school limits. The petition also asks MPP’s and city councillors to commit to working for “fare integration between all transit providers”.

Go Transit spokesperson, Anne Marie Aikins, has said the changes have been planned for some time, and they warned students in advance. She has also said that Go Transit will go ahead with the move, which, according to her, will improve overall schedule reliability.
