Coping with COVID
My experience with COVID-19 has felt very different from most of what I’ve seen reflected back to me through social media. Although I recognize the virus has led to devastating deaths and is something that is meant to be treated with very seriously, I’ve generally had a pretty easy time with lockdown.
I moved to Toronto in January, and before the virus hadn’t really felt settled in the city. Early on in lockdown my roommate left back to his parents house leaving me alone in our apartment. This paired with countless walks through my neighbourhood has given me the silence and time needed to feel grounded in the city.
Also, the ability to stay at home this much has allowed me to start cooking my own meals everyday which has me eating healthier and feeling better each day. I’ve been working out pretty regularly which is helping both my physical and mental health. I’ve also finished three excellent books: The Education of a Coach by David Halberstam, The Way To Love by Anthony De Mello and A New Thinking Man’s Guide to Pro Football by Paul Zimmerman.
The social aspect of COVID-19 has been the hardest part, no question. Luckily, I’ve been able to spend time with the person I’ve been dating quite a bit, which has been a life saver. I’ve also started playing basketball with a friend who is also self isolating.
I feel fortunate to be in this good of a situation and thankful towards those working the front lines who allow me to be in this position.
