Loneliness is a feeling many people experience at some point in their lives. January and February can be some of the toughest months. The excitement of the holidays fades, the days are cold and dark, and it’s easy to feel isolated as we return to our usual life. Last week marked “Blue Monday,” often called the most depressing day of the year, and for many, the weight of loneliness can feel heavier than ever. However, loneliness doesn't have to last forever. There are ways to overcome it, and by making small efforts, you can find real connections that make a big difference.
What Students Are Saying
“As a first-year student, it’s been really hard finding my place. I didn’t expect to feel so alone, especially when everyone around me looks like they’re already locals. It feels heavy sometimes.”
-Alex, Seneca freshman.
“I wouldn’t say I’m completely lonely. I’ve met a few people, and we hang out sometimes, but it still feels like something’s missing. Like, I’m still waiting to find my group, my real people, you know?”
-Anna, first year York U student.
“Honestly, it’s been really hard. There are days when it’s like I’m drowning in this feeling, and it’s like no one even notices. It’s heavy sometimes, and I don’t know how to get out of it.”
-Katya, Humber college.
“These last few weeks have been tough. I’ve felt pretty isolated, but I’m trying to stay positive. I just keep telling myself that if I keep trying and put myself out there, eventually things will get better.”
-Samuel, Seneca college.
