This past week at the Tribute Communities Recital Hall at York University, award-winning composer, saxophonist, and singer, Stephanie Chou was featured as part of the Jazz Artist-in-residence program. She was joined alongside American pianist and composer Jeremy Siskind. The performance lasted over two days at the Recital Hall.
Stephanie, who played the saxophone on stage was able to captivate her audience with not only her abilities to play the saxophone, but also her singing brought a harmonic feeling in the theatre. Jeremy Siskind on the other hand was able to complement the style of music that Stephanie is able to perform, with his unique style of playing the piano.

York University students and attendees of the event were extremely pleased with the outcome of their experience at the Recital Hall. It was a feeling of comfort, and enjoyment from both sides who believed that this kind of Jazzy performance was something that they hadn’t seen before.
Attendee Mark was pleased with the Jazz performance that he witnessed because he had never heard about the implementation of Chinese culture into Jazz music as a whole. Mark found the experience extremely interesting, to say the least, because this is a type of genre that he is not necessarily used to listening to. Mark expressed that this was more of a Chinese cultural genre of music, while he said that he is well familiar with jazz music itself. The cultural side of music was something that was out of the Jazz genre.

Attendee Monique was pleasantly surprised with how the performance turned out and she found it interesting that the performance was able to bring people together from several different cultures. Monique believes that the Jazz music that Stephanie Chou performed on stage was able to bring people together from different musical backgrounds which was able to bring out the creativity of the performance. Monique felt that this performance was a way to bring people of several different cultures together in this musical performance and collaboration.
Shay is a student at York University and he enjoyed the experience because it is something that he hasn’t necessarily seen before. Shay noted that the performance was a mix of Jazz and several different cultures. In terms of the Artist-in-residence program Shay believes that it has given aspiring artists and students that aspire to be artists the opportunity to be exposed to styles that they wouldn’t have ever come into contact with. Shay finds himself more used to the classical side of music, and he hasn’t been exposed to the Jazz genre but knows that he has been exposed Shay never would have thought that he would come into contact with the Jazz genre. Shay has been inspired by Jazz artists because it has given him inspiration for future arts.

Students and attendees were inspired and had an overall great experience with the musical Jazz performance from Stephanie Chou and Jeremy Siskind. The performance was able to inspire these people to further explore the Jazz genre and are extremely hopeful for the future of how Jazz music can bring people from different communities together.
