Toronto Is Now Hiring For Summer Jobs

by Sofia Abas

Mayor John Tory is trying to encourage students to apply for summer jobs. The City of Toronto held job fairs through January and February so high school students could see what’s available.  Some of those positions are: Life guards, Camp counselor or tour guides.  The City of Toronto was also helping students prepare for interviews and set them up with a profile through which they could apply.

Job Fair Feb 5th at Scarborough Civic Centre

On February 5th the Job Fair was held at the Scarborough Civic Center.  At least two hundred students came out.

” I’m a high school student and I’ve been trying to save up some money. I’m actually looking to be a summer camp counselor and I’m hoping that I can get a summer job through the City of Toronto.” said an unidentified student.

” You know I think it’s great what the city is doing for these students. They get to come here and we teach them how to apply. There’s a brochure with everything that they need to know and this gives them an opportunity to save up and learn something.”according to a city recreational employee who did not want her name to be used.

There are about 15000 programs within the Parks, Forestry and Recreation (PFR) department.  Officials say there’s a high demand for staff.  The positions offered pay a little more than minimum wage and you can check their website for more information.
