The latest Sony PS-5 is quite a hot topic all over the internet. The game system was sold out in stores and online on the very first day of launch. Not everyone was able to get one; indeed, many hearts were broken.

Antonio Slaybe was one of the lucky few. He has been playing video games ever since he was a young boy. Whether it was playing FIFA or Call of Duty online with his friends, screaming at the tops of their lungs or braving a solo game, he loved the experience. So, when the PS-5 came out, he had to have it. He and his girlfriend were all ready to get their hands on one by hook or by crook. They were hopping onto different websites to see if the gaming system was available, and finally, they managed to buy the PS-5. He was excited to add the new PS-5 to his home entertainment collection.

“I’m not a tech expert, but in terms of speed in which games start up and connect online, it has never been faster and more efficient. Oh, and the graphics are stunning. I believe this is the best system to date!” He is nothing but impressed by the latest Playstation.

It is safe to say that many others share similar feelings about the PS5. Fifty-four millennials participated in a poll on Instagram asking if they enjoyed playing PS5; 72% said they loved the game. Even though people are going crazing over the new Play station, Jim Ryan, the president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, stated that he couldn’t promise if the supply will increase that much until Christmas. It is difficult for Sony to increase the production of the PS5 amid the shortage of semiconductors and other components.

People are bummed not to have the opportunity to get the PS-5.   For some people, trying to get the PS5, may have turned into a nightmare. The high demand and supply shortage of PS-5 systems have led to robberies and cyber theft. Many people are trying to sell their PS-5 on Kijiji and Facebook marketplace. Shockingly enough, buyers are providing sellers with fake E-transfers to get the units purchased. Similarly, a robbery could also happen when somebody is trying to sell a PS5.  A buyer shows up, but instead of paying the money, the alleged customer Physically assaults and threatens them and steals the PS5 from them.

Toronto Police fraud investigator Julie Campbell reported that recently a man was robbed in this way in Scarborough.

In her “Scam of the Week” tweet. Campbell warned buyers to “just use caution when dealing with these high end items.”

Her advice? Beware of new sellers.   “A lot of sites like Kijiji or facebook Marketplace, or various buy and sell items have a review section. So if somebody has been on a site for several years, and has several positive reviews, it’s more likely that the person is a legitimate trader of goods.  We would more likely see somebody who is a scammer or somebody who set out to do a robbery,  that account has been made within the last month, and there are no reviews.”

Campbell also stated that young people are more likely to be victimized by this kind scam.   She says that one should meet them in a very public place, where video cameras can capture what’s going on and take a picture of the buyer’s licence plate if possible. She further adds that instead of E-transfer, cash transfers are more trustworthy.

She even suggests setting up the transaction in front of a police station.
