Storm in Newfoundland washes away Trans Canada Highway

Newfoundlanders are used to wind and rain but not too massive amounts all at once. On Tuesday, Channel-Port aux Basques, a city located in the southwest of Newfoundland received 165 mm of rain, an amount higher than normal. In this period they used to receive approximately 120 mm of rain.

A culvert has formed between the highways Doyles and South Branch and was completely wiped out due to weather disaster. The province is not considering evacuating any homes yet, but officials and police are asking people to stay off roads. Rainstorms in this area are disturbing the operations supply chain, and these issues are fast becoming one of the government’s biggest concerns according to the premier of Newfoundland, Andrew Furey. In fact, trucks and cars are struggling have difficulty transport goods since highways are not accessible at the moment. Elvis Loveless, minister of transportation and infrastructure, said that crews are assessing the damage and standing by to begin repairs once the storm calms.

But the nightmare is not over yet, the rain intensified early Wednesday morning and more rain is expected! Meteorologists expect the system to bring 150 to 200 millimeters of rain to the area in total.
