The Ontario government has launched a strategic energy partnership with the United States called "Fortress Am-Can," responding to Donald Trump’s threats of imposing 25% tariffs on Canadian goods. Premier Doug Ford is pushing this energy-focused alliance to make both countries more reliant on each other, particularly in the energy sector, to strengthen their economic relationship and help avoid future trade issues.
In an effort to counter Trump's tariff threats and highlight the advantages of energy trade between Ontario and the United States, Ford has been speaking to American media outlets. Currently, Ontario's electricity system mostly depends on nuclear, hydro, and wind power systems. Ontario already sends enough electricity to power 1.5 million homes in the U.S., including Michigan, New York, and Minnesota.
Increasing Energy Exports
A major part of Ontario's strategy is to increase electricity exports to the U.S., making both countries more interdependent when it comes to energy. Ford believes that by strengthening this partnership, Ontario can protect its economy from potential trade restrictions and create a stable foundation for cross-border trade.
“Our energy is clean and reliable,” Ford said. “We need to strengthen our economic relationship with the U.S., and energy is a big part of that.”
Ontario’s electricity supply is one of the cleanest in the world, with over 90% of its energy coming from carbon-free sources. This allows Ontario to position itself as a key supplier of clean energy to the U.S., helping American states reduce their carbon footprint while supporting Ontario’s economic growth.
Working Group to Build Energy Security
In addition to increasing energy exports, the Ontario government has plans to create a working group with American lawmakers. This group would focus on energy security, working together to address challenges related to sustainability, energy production, and partnership across borders.
“By working directly with American legislators, we can build a safer and more reliable energy future for both our countries,” Ford said. This partnership is expected to strengthen not only economic ties but also the energy infrastructure that connects two countries.
A Stronger Future for Canada-U.S. Relations
While Ontario is committed to boost partnership with the U.S., Ford has hinted at possible retaliation if tariffs on Canadian goods become a reality. These actions could include restricting electricity exports to the U.S. and even blocking imports of certain American products.
“With a new administration set to take office in the White House, our government has an ambitious plan to build up Fortress Am-Can to usher in a new American and Canadian century defined by unprecedented growth, job creation and prosperity. We can only do so by working together and respecting each other,” Ford said. It shows how serious Ontario is about defending its interests in the face of potential trade challenges.
Fortress Am-Can represents more than just an energy agreement—it’s about building a stronger, more interconnected relationship between Canada and the U.S. By focusing on clean energy exports, Ontario aims to create economic stability, protect jobs, and reduce the risk of future trade conflicts.
As Ontario continues to promote clean energy and encourage cross-border relationships, the Fortress Am-Can initiative is expected to play an essential part in shaping the future of Canada-U.S. trade relations.
