In what would be his fourth OHL season, Niagara Ice Dogs defencemen Mason Howard will remain at home until the league reaches an agreement to start the new season.
The ongoing pandemic has caused stress for players all over, especially veterans, “The pandemic affects me a lot.” Howard said, “Being in my final two seasons, I don’t have much time to get looked at by any pro teams to extend my hockey career.”
Although Howard is unable to participate in his usual team workouts, he was attending workout sessions with his trainer before the lockdown. Now, he has been keeping in shape at home as much as possible mostly focussing on his cardio.
Last season, the Ice Dogs were competing for a playoff spot until the season was canceled due to COVID-19, “Having the season canceled was tough for everyone in the organization. We were battling for the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.” Howard said, “Our team was extremely young so it would have been nice for the guys to experience a playoff run in their first couple years.”
As of right now, the OHL season start date is unknown. The league announced that play will resume on February 4, however that has been delayed until further notice, “We haven’t heard much on if we’re going to have a season this year, but if there is, I’m sure everyone will be ready to play.”
Howard has become a leader for his Ice Dogs and is eager to get back on the ice for a chance to continue his career. After this season, if there is a season, Howard will be in his overage year which will be his last OHL eligible season.
