A recent study from the Radiological Society of North America has raised concerns about the immediate effects of e-cigarette vaping on vascular health, even without nicotine. While people are aware of the risks they do not seem to matter to certain people, a Seneca student who did not want to be identified said “ I Vape because it makes me feel better I know the it will later affect me but I am here for a good time and not a long time". Presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America, the study defies the conventional thought that e-cigarettes are a safer option than traditional smoking.
The e-cigarette is made into a liquid mixture, giving all these people around them less toxicity compared to the tobacco smoke and apparently it still affects the cardiovascular system poorly.
"Though e-cigarettes did not lead to the presence of toxic fumes as do cigarettes, they still result in impaired vascular function either with and without nicotine", Dr. Marianne Nabbdout said, the author of the study. A total of 31 healthy individuals between ages 21 to 49 were exposed to tobacco cigarette smoke, e-cigarette aerosol with and without nicotine. MRI measures were of changes in femoral artery blood flow along with changes in the oxygen saturation in blood. All people that participated demonstrated significantly lower velocity blood flow post-smoking and/or vaping with the most diminished readings recorded after vaping the nicotine-containing e-cigarettes. These findings suggest that both smoking and vaping reduce vascular function by decreasing blood flow and oxygen uptake. Although the study examined acute responses, Dr. Nabbout made sure to point out that repeated use can lead to chronic cardiovascular conditions.
While a lot of people understand the harm behind vaping they still continue to do it regardless of the risks because they get a certain pleasure from it while others like Ngozie say "People easily get addicted to it don't realize how bad it is for there health because it does not look as bad as a cigarette, it is disguised as a device thats suppose to help one quit smoking but since it’s supposed to be a better alternative people tend to be more addicted to it and it can cause more damage than cigarettes because some fluids it produces hasn’t even been researched yet and I prefer to stay away from it than harm myself".
Although these products were heavily marketed as being 'safer' than traditional cigarette smoking, emerging evidence demonstrated some potential health risks-a one-size-fits-all response that merits further studies.
