Former Toronto Liberal MP says Trudeau should step down

A former Parliamentary secretary to the Prime Minister says Justin Trudeau has lost the confidence of Canadians and cannot win the next election.

“When you are in power for ten years, you may have 10 years of policy and success, but you also have ten years of failure and mistakes. Voter’s fatigue set in, and government that’s in the spotlight for too long start to fade,” Adam Vaughan told S@YNEWS in an exclusive interview.

Vaughan was a Liberal MP representing Spadina-Fort York from 2014 to 2021.

A recent Abacus poll shows a steady increase in dissatisfaction with Trudeau among all voters, from 44% in 2022 to 59% today. It shows both male and female voters disapprove of Trudeau, with 77% citing his weakness as a leader and 66% saying they were simply tired of him. An Ipsos poll reveals that Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre is the top pick for Prime Minister among 45% of Canadians, with Trudeau lagging at 19 points, even trailing the NDP’s Jagmeet Singh at 23 percent. Vaughan, Trudeau’s former Parliamentary Secretary and now a Principal at Navigator says, “I think they are punishing him right now. In large part for not recognizing that it is time for a change,” Vaughan told S@YNews, “Canadians have decided to tune Trudeau out, as a result of that his numbers are dragging the poll numbers down.”

In this year’s by-elections, the Liberals lost two of their “safest seats” in Toronto and Montreal, leaving Prime Minister Trudeau in an even more tenuous position for the upcoming election as he falls behind in the polls. During an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Trudeau was asked to explain the reasons for his unpopularity.

Prime Minister Trudeau said on The Late Show, “It’s a really tough time in Canada right now, people are hurting.” after Colbert touched on his party losing seats in parliament, the fallout in the polls, and rivals wanting to force him out of office.

Vaughan says, “Where the Liberal party is failing right now is not separating out those things Canadians dislike from the party and championing those things that Canadians do like. Part of the problem with that is that the leader is trying to sell the message. He’s not able to win an election. I think it’s time for a change and they don’t understand why he can’t see that.”

The next scheduled election isn’t until next October.
