Oscar Guzman, a first semester student at Seneca says that the Seneca Student Federation (SSF) food bank helped him lessen his expenses. “The fact that I have rice, I don’t need to buy it. Everything is useful especially if you cook your own food”, Oscar said. He still uses the food he got last month and he plans to get another one for this month.

SSF offers free food hampers for full-time students of Seneca. However, students must first schedule an appointment online to receive the food hamper. Every month, each student can receive one food bag.  The food hamper includes a small bag of rice, pasta, tomato in a can, lentils, peas, and chicken broth.

Alexandria Cortez, a student staff member from SSF said the peak season for students receiving food bags is during the fall semester since students are returning to in-person classes. They also do not accept donations for the food bank. They get their budget from the $35 membership fee that students pay with their tuition fee, and each food bag costs $25.

According to SSF, they are committed to helping as many students in need as possible during this unprecedented time, “We do understand that affording groceries can be a little hard for students, that is why every month we offer free food hampers to as many students as we can.”

SSF also offers free breakfast meals. The food bag has cereals, protein bars, fruits, and juice which is good food to give you energy for the day.

Students who have used the free food hampers and breakfast meals feel pleased as they see what is included inside the food bag. Some of them are surprised to see a lot of items and food choices.
