A Canadian field hockey legend is being made. Ontario University Athletics All-Star, Prava Sandhu, is now a member of Canada’s national indoor field hockey team.

She competed in her first Pan American Cup, which was hosted in Calgary, Alberta in March. She helped Team Canada secure a fourth-place finish. They earned themselves a spot as a wild card to continue their fight for the Indoor World Cup in 2025.

Sandhu says she trains almost every day of the week leading up to big tournaments. She adds that she’s sacrificed a lot to make it to this moment. Ultimately, she says it’s worth it in the pursuit of her dreams.

The Canadian Women’s Indoor Field Hockey Team will compete for a World Cup spot this summer. Sandhu also says she will be trying out for the national outdoor team later this year.

A Legendary Legacy

Prava Sandhu’s love for the sport began at the age of six. She credits her father, Nick Sandhu, who gifted her a mini-field hockey stick.  She is in good company, having a dad who is in Field Hockey Canada’s Hall of Fame. He was inducted in 2016 following an 11-year stint with the national outdoor team.

Sandhu says she was also inspired by her older sister, Poonam Sandhu. She played on the outdoor Canadian national team and coached for the University of British Columbia’s field hockey team.

Sandhu says she is grateful for the opportunity to witness the time and effort it takes to play at a high level against top international teams.

Her first competitive experience was with York University’s varsity field hockey team. She says being a part of that team helped her gain confidence, strength, and grit. Sandhu walked away with two Ontario University Athletics (OUA) gold medals and two U Sports national silver medals.

Now, on the Canadian Women’s Indoor Field Hockey Team, she intends to help the team qualify for the World Cup. Beyond that, she wants to play in the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
