Barbara Hodder’s Veteran journey

Barbara Hodder's start up.

Barbara Hodder started serving when she was 35 years old. She immigrated to Canada and she always wanted to join the military. When she got her citizenship , the citizen judge told her to do something special with her citizenship. When she heard that she decided it was the perfect time to join the military. She went to the recruiting office and joined. After getting sworn in and signing all of the paperwork , she was officially apart of the military.

She started off at the HMCS at York as a naval warfare officer for 5 years. She then transitioned to director of music. She enjoyed every part of it. In the past year she transitioned out to be the executive officer at 176 Scarborough Sea cadet unit. A big part that she liked about this role is that she can teach young people a lot of skills that not many people get taught.  She teaches them how to write a resume ,  how to conduct a job interview , personal financing and more responsibility skills.

In her civilian life she is a senior manager of external labour in the management consulting space at the bank of Montreal. She has been working in finance for 13 years.

How has Barbara Hodder's life changed since joining the military?

Barbara's life changed in many ways. A big part about being in the military is being on time. "You cannot be late in the military". That is a big skill you learn in the military , as it was for Barbara. Barbara also learn how to properly speak to people in a regular and professional matter. When it comes to large audiences , Barbara has emerged and is great speaking to the public. She sang the National anthem for the Governor General at the Maritime ball in Ottawa with the HCMS York band and Julie Payette. It was her most memorable moment of her career.

The level of confidence sparked high after her career in the military.

These skills impacted Barbara because she grew as an individual while gaining these great life skills.

The day and feeling when Barbara Hodder was sworn in.

On March 31st 2016 , Barbara was sworn in. She describes this moment as terrifying yet exciting experience at the same time. It was a terrible thunderstorm and the entire building was dark. She was already intimidated because before you are sworn in , there is a-lot of Government paperwork that she needed to fill out. The specific paper document of unlimited liability states that you accept a job where you can be sent to a warzone.  Also paperwork giving contact info of people who to notify if something bad were to happen.

After the paperwork stage , there is a small ceremony where she swore an oath to the monarch that says she will defend and protect. After that she was taken away and given a rank and started to be called by her last name.

This was a new chapter in her life.
