After much anticipation, the cast of Avengers Doomsday has finally been revealed. Since Avengers Endgame released six years ago in 2019, audiences have all been wondering the same thing. Who will be the next cast of Avengers? Avengers Endgame was a culmination of 11 years of storytelling. It featured both the Avengers, and the Guardians Of The Galaxy. The film grossed $2.799 billion at the box office worldwide. It made $858.4 domestically. Endgame is the second highest grossing film of all time.
Avengers Endgame was truly a cinematic event. The demand for tickets were so high, movie theatre websites crashed the day tickets went on sale. Viral social media reactions flooded the internet of scenes that are now iconic in pop culture.
Who’s Returning?
Original Avengers star Chris Hemsworth is the only original cast member to return. He will be joined by Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie, Letisha Wright, Simu Liu, and Danny Ramirez. It was also confirmed that both casts of Marvels next movies will be featured in the film. Those being the cast of the Thunderbolts, and The Fantastic Four: The First Steps. The Thunderbolts stars Sebastian Stan. Florence Pugh, Lewis Pullman, Wyatt Russel, David Harbour, and Hanna John- Kamen will return. Returning from The Fantastic Four movie, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, Ebon Moss-Bachrach will join the team up.
To top that off Marvel Studios confirmed the return of some of the original X-Men cast. Ian Mckellen, and Patrick Stewart will return as Professor X and Magneto. They will be joined by returning stars James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn, and Alan Cumming. Those three famously played Cyclops, Mystique, and Nightcrawler respectively. Channing Tatum will also be returning as Gambit. He infamously had a solo movie that never got made. After appearing in last summers Deadpool and Wolverine, he became a fan favourite. Audiences will get to see him team up with the X-Men in live action for the first time. Also returning are Winston Duke, and Tenoch Huerta from Black Panther Wakanda Forever. Duke played M’Baku, while Huerta played the villan Namor. Namor has crossed over with The Fantastic Four many times in the comics. Audiences will also get to see that portrayed in a live action movie for the first time.
Who Is Noticeably Absent?
While this is without a doubt exciting news, it does leave many wondering about who is missing. The first couple that come to mind are Tom Hollands Spiderman, and Elizabeth Olsens Wanda Maximoff. Both are some of the most popular characters in the MCU. Both were in the last two Avengers movies. They were both even in Captain America Civil War. Them not being announced as part of the cast has left many disappointed, and confused. Wandas return has been hinted at for quite some time. After the success of spinoff shows Wandavision, and Agatha All Along, many thought she would be returning in this movie. Although this movie is a two parter. Olsen and Holland could be featured in the second part of this crossover Avengers Secret Wars. That movie releases the following year in May 2027. That would make sense as Tom Hollands Spiderman movie releases in between those. It’s been speculated that Spiderman Brand New Day will take place simultaneously as Avengers Doomsday. That would explain Hollands absence. It’s also been rumoured that the movie will also be a multiverse movie.
What Does This Mean For Avengers Doomsday?
This means you can expect Avengers D0omsday to be a massive multiverse crossover. Robert Downey Jr will be returning, but instead as a different character Doctor Doom. Doom will wreak havic on the universe in the upcoming film. The new Avengers team will have to join forces with the Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts, and X-Men to stop him. It wouldn’t be surprising if even Hugh Jackman is in the movie. After all the X-Men are the franchise he’s from. With Channing Tatum confirmed to be returning from Deadpool and Wolverine. this makes it all the more likely.
The Downfall of Marvel
While the MCU is the most successful franchise of all time, its had its share of misses over the years. After Avengers Endgame released back in 2019, many fans have felt underwhelmed by many following entries in the MCU. Many disliked Eternals, Thor Love and Thunder, The Marvels, Captain America Brave New World, and Ant Man Quantumania. Thor Love and Thunder was the only one of those movies that broke even at the box office, while the rest flopped. Not to mention the Disney Plus shows have been hit and miss. The first round of shows in 2021 were successful. Wandavision, Falcon and the Winter Solider, Loki, and Hawkeye were all well received by audiences and critics. Moonknight had it’s fans, while Ms Marvel, She Hulk, and Secret Invasion were largely disliked by fans. Thankfully there have been some bright spots as Shang Chi, Deadpool and Wolverine, as well as the recent Guardians Of The Galaxy, Black Panther and Spiderman movies were loved by fans. All were huge hits at the box office as well, with the exception of Shang Chi. When it regards to the following MCU tv shows, Agatha All Along, and Loki season 2 were very well received as well.
What Made The Original Marvel Format So Successful?
What made the original Marvel format so successful was its sense of connectivity. A lot of the movies stood on their own. Having said that, they each played the part in an overall story. In that time due to their only being 2-3 movies a year being released, those stories were wrapped up sooner. Meaning audiences didn’t have to wait as long for a story beat to be wrapped up. It would play a part in either the following movie, or a crossover movie soon to release. It kept the conversation and excitement going at that time. Now with the Disney Plus tv shows, it seems there are different corners of the MCU. Only specific stories get developed, and not with big consequences. If an event happens in an MCU project, it isn’t mentioned in the following project. It instead is developed in a Disney Plus show or one movie years later. With the amount of people that only watch the movies, this disconnects that audience. Movies like The Marvels which relied heavily on having seen previous Disney Plus shows bombed in theatres. In fact it is the biggest flop from Marvel Studios.
What Can Marvel Do To Fix This?
Marvel should keep their movies and tv shows separate. It’s been proven that not enough people keep up with the tv shows. If there are characters that appear in both movies and tv shows, they should be introduced first in the movies. For instance one team the MCU has been setting up since the beginning of phase four is the Young Avengers. Also known as the Champions. Leaked concept art has confirmed they are set to appear in the second part of this event Avengers Secret Wars. While the team has been set up by Marvel, they never have officially crossed over. Following this movie, Marvel should green lit a spinoff series on Disney Plus. Majority of these characters have been introduced on Disney Plus show, and are better suited for a tv show. The show doesn’t also need to be required viewing for following MCU movies. Fans who want more story can watch, but those who just want to watch the big screen adventures can skip. They can watch just the movies with ease. This would be the perfect example on how to handle this. The MCU has had its recent share of hits. Especially last years Deadpool and Wolverine which grossed a billion dollars. The next two Avengers movies and Spiderman Brand New Day will be massive hits. It’s almost guaranteed all 3 of those movies will cross a billion. After Marvel wraps up the multiverse with these movies, they should put all their focus towards their present characters. It will be great to see past characters like the original X-Men, and the original Spidermans. Having said that, now we will get a proper sendoff for all those characters. Marvels new characters like the Fantastic Four, and new Avengers team should have the spotlight. The movies released after the Avengers two parter should also be movies that connect, and have stakes. Each movie should build towards an overarching story, the way the Infinity Saga did. Each movie should be carefully green lit as well. It’s been proven that not every Marvel movie is a guaranteed success. Marvel should look at which characters movies have been the most successful as they factor in which sequels to greenlight. Hopefully Marvel has a strategy like this put in place. Otherwise after the multiverse saga concludes with the next Spiderman, and two Avengers, they could be back in a slump.
