Unvaccinated people aren’t allowed to go out on Austria because of the new lockdown plans. This with the aim of combating the spike in Covid-19 cases.

“The aim is very clear: that we give the green light this Sunday for a nationwide lockdown for the unvaccinated,” the chancellor Alexander Schallenber said.

“Lockdown for the unvaccinated means one cannot leave one’s home unless one is going to work, shopping (for essentials), stretching one’s legs- exactly what we all had suffer through in 2020,” Schellenberg said.

“I don’t see why two-thirds should lose their freedom because one -third is dithering,” Schallenberg said, referring to unvaccinated citizens. “For me, it is clear that there should be no lockdown for the vaccinated out of solidarity for the unvaccinated.”

Austria had a record  67,148 Covid-19 cases last week according to John Hopkins University data. With this, the Austrian government decided to take the lockdown measures. The Chancellor added that they will be “very harsh measurse,” and “probably inevitable”. Data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control shows that only the 65% of Austrians are vaccinated, the lowest rate in western Europe, it means that the 40% of the population will be affected by this new regulation.

Schallenberg mentioned that in the future the government and Austrian authorities might make vaccine regulation a mandate for certain professional groups.
