Coming off a loss, the Sting were looking to bounce back against the Centennial Colts and they got off to a great start. Seneca led for most of the game, but the Colts stayed within striking distance and they went on a late run to steal the win from the Sting.

Seneca started the game on an 11-0 run as the Colts were struggling to make shots. At the end of the first quarter, the Sting extended the lead to 12 points and they were in command of the game. Centennial tried crawling their way back but the Sting still had a 10 point lead with over four minutes to play in the fourth. Seneca’s offence dried up as they went scoreless on field goals for the remainder of the game, while the Colts went on a run to grab a late lead. Seneca was able to amount only two points on free throws, in the meantime, the Colts scored 3 three-pointers in a row to take the lead and never look back. Christianna Crooks started the fury of three-pointers at the 3:27 mark to pull the Colts within five. With 2:18 to play, Errazo gave the colts a 69-68 lead. Then DeSantos-Gutierrez, who was 0-5 from 3 at that point, sealed the game with another three-pointer with 22 seconds remaining.

Shakiya Stephens led the way for the Sting with 23 points along with 4 assists accompanied by Katrina Martin with 19 points and 6 assists. The Colts were led by Abigail Baptiste-Phillip with 26 points to go along with a whopping 23 rebounds and her teammate Christianna Crooks added 20 points.

Seneca committed 21 turnovers and that played a big part in the loss. The Sting will look to minimize fouling in their next outing as they were called for 30 personal fouls on Sunday afternoon. Seneca shot an abysmal 5% from three, going 1 for 20, on their opener but they improved on that end by shooting 5 for 18 against the Colts. Close to a 25% improvement behind the three-point line, although the baseline isn’t high. Defence was a strong suit for the Sting yesterday, as they racked up 9 steals and 3 block shots.

They’ll look to improve their play as they’ve opened  0-2 on the season. The Sting will try to bounce back against Durham on Friday, February 18.
