The Sting men’s basketball team was 6-4 so far this season going into Friday night’s game. Having won the last 4 games, the team was looking to take their winning streak to 5.  The Sting was 0-1 against the George Brown Huskies this season and Seneca was looking to even the season series 1-1.

As the game was about to start, the Sting gathered in their huddle and started their team chant. Seneca ended up winning the tipoff and getting the game’s first points. Then a foul was committed by the Huskies to brought the Sting to the free throw line. Both of the free throws were made.  Seneca was up 4-0.  Seneca struggled after that as the Huskies went 2-3 from the three point line. The defense from the Sting kept turning over the ball, leading to the Huskies getting more points as their lead grew to 12-6. You could hear the disappointment from the coaching staff on the Seneca bench as one of the assistant coaches yelled, “Are we going to defend”.  Seneca started to come back bringing them to within 2. Timeout was then taken by the Huskies. Then the Huskies got a two pointer to increase their lead to 16-12 with 2:49 left in the first quarter. Several fouls were committed at the end as the Huskies ended the first quarter 22-16.

The second quarter would see more of the same as the Sting couldn’t stop turning over the ball, leading to more points for the Huskies. The turnaround for the Sting was remarkable as they would step up to the free throw line getting both of their free throws to go cutting lead back to three. Then Elijah Green from the Sting dropped a three pointer to tie it up.  George Brown then got two free throws as Seneca’s Jaylen Moore-Tucker committed a foul. The sting was down by five. As the second was about to end Seneca managed to tie the game 35-35. The coach, Jay McNeilly,  said he was happy to be tied,  but he wasn’t happy about the execution and wants to see the team play better in the second half.

The coach got what he wanted.  The Sting came out guns blazing, taking the lead early, 50-42. The defense was better as they would stop the Huskies from attempting a comeback. Seneca took a foul with 0.2 left in the quarter. Huskies made all three shots. Seneca led 60-55.

Seneca’s defence tightened up in the fourth quarter, blocking shots and doing a great job clogging the zone and not allowing an open shot by George Brown’s shooters. The Sting gets a three pointer to go.  A missed three by the Huskies leads to a foul for Seneca and both of the free throws were made increasing their lead.  Seneca went on to win 83-66. Katrell Dos Santos led the team with 17 points and had 4 assists in the game. The Sting improving to 7-4 with a five game win streak good enough to tie for fourth in the division. George Brown drops to 4-7.  The Sting’s next game is Saturday against Loyalist in Belleville.
