After endless controversies, bad reviews, and a scaled-back premiere, the numbers are in for Disney’s Snow White remake and they are bleak. The remake of the iconic 1937 animated movie made just $42.2 million domestically in its opening weekend. As for its worldwide opening, it sits at just $86.1 million. Made on a budget of $270 million, the movie has to make double that just to break even.
It is unlikely to get better from here, though not impossible. Disney’s Mufasa The Lion King had a weak $35 million opening. That movie went on to gross over $700 million at the box office.
Though it’s important to note those circumstances were different. Mufasa The Lion King opened during the holidays when many people were getting ready for Christmas. Those who didn’t have time to go opening weekend went in the following weeks. Not only that, but that movie also opened up against another family movie Sonic 3. That movie tracked more ticket sales, in an already busy time. Despite that Mufasa persevered in subsequent weeks and ultimately made far more at the box office in the end.
However for Snow White this isn’t the case. The movie opened in a time that is Spring Break for many kids. There is also no other competition at the theatres, so it seems this is more the issue of the movie not appealing to audiences.
