Second Career

“Second Career” an Ontario based program to provide opportunities for the workers left unemployed and laid off due to the pandemic. This morning Premier Ford had a presentation this morning discussing the expansion of the Second Career program .In spring of 2022, Second Career plans to to expand to help benefit more than just laid off, unemployed workers but also youth, gig-workers, and self-employed individuals.  Second Career can provide when applied for up to $28,000 in costs including tuition,  books, manuals, transportation and basic living.

The training program will be expanded to serve more people including social assistance workers, self-employed workers, youth, gig-workers and others.  Ford has also proposed the idea of extending the temporary refundable Ontario Jobs Training Tax Credit to 2022 which was initially introduced into the 2021 Ontario budget. The extension would provide approximately $275 million in additional support to roughly 240,000 people, or an average $1,150 to help Ontario workers on upgrading their skills.

Ford stated “Since March 2021, when the Second Career program was launched, it has helped thousands and thousands of people train for new careers and land new jobs.” Since the 2021 push of Second Career helping out the people left unemployed from the pandemic, the increase in workers accessing the program has gone up by 71%. Building off these changes for the proposed program expansion, will help local employers find the talent they need, while providing a hand up for those who want to re-train for in-demand careers. This expansion is an excellent opportunity for those who’ve suffered the effects of employment issues over the past two years and with the right qualifications, the ball can start to roll for those who’ve been stuck in an unemployment predicament.

“We’re helping our workers and businesses recover. We’re making sure no worker is left behind. We’re working for workers.” stated Ontario’s Minister of Labour, Monte McNaughton.  The Ontario government is doing everything they can to accommodate it’s citizens and gives people an opportunity to not only become a better employer but also opens up new life skills that they will carry for life from the training. A dream come true for those who’ve struggled over the past year and a half but weren’t qualified for Second Career’s benefits.
