Scooby Doo Fans unite! A new live action project is on its way. For the first time ever Scooby Doo will be coming to the small screen as a live action show. Not much is known about the new show, other than it will be an origin story regarding how Mystery Inc formed. This story was previously done in a 2009 Cartoon Network tv movie titled Scooby Doo The Mystery Begins. It will be interesting to see how the Netflix show differs. The most notable Scooby Doo live action projects are the 2002 movie Scooby Doo, and the sequel Scooby Doo 2 Monsters Unleashed. While both movies were panned by critics, they have become cult classics amongst many born in the 90’s and early 2000’s. Many born in that time have fun nostalgic memories of either seeing the movie in theatres, or buying/renting the movie from their local Blockbuster Home Video.
The original movies were criticized by critics for being “too stupid for adults, and too scary for kids”. After all, the movies were made for kids. Having said that, the demographic and generation that grew up with those movies would beg to differ with the criticism of it being “too scary for kids”.
Fans are excited to see the next live action adaptation of Scooby Doo. Most fans have been expressing their excitement and questions regarding the tone of the series.
Netflix previously did a show based on the Archie Jughead series titled Riverdale. That show was a live action adaption, but instead of it being for kids, it was a dark teen melodrama. It will be interesting to see what direction the new Scooby Doo show takes.
Another question that has risen is who will be cast in the roles of the Mystery Inc characters. The 2000’s movies were praised for the casting of Matthew Lillard as Shaggy, and Linda Cardellini as Velma.
