Wouldn’t you agree most holiday movies have the usual Greater good theme – you know, highlighting acts of generosity, kindness, compassion and gratitude. Contrary to popular belief not all of the films consumed around the holidays are insightful about human goodness or adept at conveying how we can become better. To name a few of the top, The Grinch, Die Hard and The Night Before.

So, for this Christmas, we have selected movies that are feel good films which don’t scream Christmas at face value but

“It’s a Wonderful Life (1984)” by Frank Capra

Every Christmas for several years, people would shred one of my favorite films “It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)”. The film is about a small-town baker named George Bailey. At the start of the film George contemplates suicide – until an angel help him see his life in a new way. Critics suggest that this story sends a horrible message: Sacrifice your dreams, don’t try; live small, eat dirt, and then smile and say it was caviar. In my opinion, however, It’s A Wonderful Life is about a man who gets few of the things he wanted but everything he actually needed.

“PERFECT DAYS (2023)” by German filmmaker Wim Winders tells a heartwarming tale of a man’s everyday existence and its remarkable, understated disclosures. The story centers on Hirayama, a janitor who cleans public restrooms, and how his everyday activities follow recurring patterns. However, the days—calm in their routine—also add something unique to Hirayama’s existence as the guy passes from public park to park.

The Intouchables (2011) by Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano single-handedly one of the best French films which capture the true life event of an aristocrat who becomes a quadriplegic from a paragliding accident. The film was nominated for 40 awards and had won 38. Francois Cluzets character Phillipe is being taken care of by Omar Sy’s Driss. An unlikely friendship spark between the two which pushed Phillipe to live past his condition. It’s an example of smart and capable filmmaking which can make you laugh and tug on your heart strings.

Regardless of what you find yourself watching be sure to stay safe and have a happy holiday!
