Looney Tunes The Day The Earth Blew Up Review

By Jordan Taylor

The film follows Daffy Duck and Porky Big on a mission to save the universe from an alien invasion. For the first time ever a theatrically released Looney Tunes movie is fully animated. All of the past Looney Tunes movies released such as Back In Action, or Space Jam have been a hybrid of cartoon characters and live action characters.

However for Looney Tunes: The Day The Earth Blew Up, audiences can expect to see the world akin to the classic Looney Tunes Cartoons. The excitement doesn’t just end there either. The film is entirely hand-drawn animated. Hand-drawn animation also known as 2D animation has gone nearly extinct when it relates to theatrically animated movies. It has long been replaced with 3D animation. For an iconic franchise such as Looney Tunes to use its original animation, rather than update it with 3D animation, it will leave fans feeling satisfied. As well as fans of hand-drawn animation.

The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie (2024) - IMDb

It truly is amazing to see a hand-drawn animated movie released in theatres. There couldn’t have been a better franchise to bring it back than the Looney Tunes franchise. Looney Tunes is famous for its slapstick humour, and exaggerated physical comedy. It’s a core element of those cartoons. Those elements and physical gags are made for hand-drawn animation. Looney Tunes: The Day The Earth Blew Up delivers on all of those hallmarks the franchise is famous for.

The film also has all the charm that classic Looney Tunes cartoons are well regarded for. It’s fun, widely entertaining and extremely charming. The film feels like one long Looney Tunes episode, but a very good episode. The film also feels very worthy of being in theatres. Although it could have been twenty minutes shorter. Overall it’s a great watch, especially in theatres. Families and adults who grew up with Looney Tunes should definitely go to the theatres to experience this newest instalment. After all this movies release is a historic one.

Looney Tunes Film 'The Day the Earth Blew Up' To World Premiere At Annecy

Looney Tunes The Day The Earth Blew up nearly wasn’t even released. It was originally a streaming movie that was meant to release on HBO Max. However the movies release was cancelled by Warner Bros, and was scrapped for tax write offs. This was devastating to fans and people working on it, as the movie was completely finished. It wasn’t until movie distributor company Ketchup Entertainment bought the rights to the movie. Due to that the movie wasn’t just cancelled, but was upgraded for a theatrical release. One can only hope this will encourage more hand drawn animated movies to be made. As well as more Looney Tunes movies to be made. After all Warner Bros has a massive collection of Looney Tunes characters. It would be a missed opportunity for characters such as Bugs Bunny not to grace the silver screen.

Three and a half stars
