Matthew Pereira is a 20 year old college student at Centennial college and in his free time he babysits dogs. To be more specific Matthew has offered to dog sit for his elderly neighbours and threw out his street and neighbouring neighbourhoods. Matthew has been doing this for 2 years now, since the beginning of the pandemic after speaking with him he said that one day he felt that he should be helping his elderly neighbours as he saw them struggle to cope with the pandemic and all its coming changes along with taking care of their pets.

Throughout the pandemic Matthew has babysat a total of 15 different dogs named Luna, Max, Bella, Coco, Ash and Sam also known as the twains and many more who are recurring customers on a weekly basis. Matthew has roughly 1 to 2 dogs in his care for a week at a time. When I ask Matthew what is like to have such a busy schedule on a daily basis he said ” watching all those dogs is vary fun and I simply enjoy it.”

One of Matthews neighbours said ” what Matthew is doing is amazing helping another person in a time of need with out any explanation of anything in return is a wonderful trait to have.”

With all his studies he hopes to become a veterinarian in the future where he can not only take care of dogs but he can ensure that they are healthy in their day-to-day lives. One thing that separates Matthew with any other doggy daycare or dog walking service is that he doesn’t charge people for what he does. Matthew only wants to help for the sake of helping he says that he witnesses a lot of hardship in this world and if taking care of someone’s pet for a week to help them organize their life a little bit or even to allow the owners to have a break from their reality, to have one less thing to worry about.

Matthew Pereira has always been a dog loving person and with the opportunity to become a veterinarian some time in the future. When the pandemic hit our world Matthew saw the avenue where he could help his fellow elderly neighbours, while at the same time taking care of dogs and receiving first person experience with different types of dogs such as Pomeranians, Bulldog, Boston Terrier, Cane Corso and their different personalities that come with them.

The Richmond Green community centre is in a great place with many facilities, such as an indoor soccer field, an outdoor soccer field and an outdoor baseball court, a playground for children and many walkways. One thing that interests Matthew about the Richmond Green community centre is the trails that you can take long and beautiful walks down, when Matthew is taking care of a dog he usually takes them for walks down these paths.

Matthew says that out of all the dogs he takes care of Ash and Sam are the trouble makers, “when I walk the twains you know Ash and Sam I feel like they make it there priority to make the walk as difficult as possible, true story a few week ago I was walking them and out of nowhere I see Sam eating something off the ground so I go to stop him then Ash just full on ran after a squirrel and I went tumbling down.”

Some people who have pets may not have the energy to go on long walks when it’s cold or when it’s too hot or even when the weather is great they just may not have the ability to go for long walks with their pets. On the other hand when Matthew’s walking dogs he not only sees it as beneficial for the dog’s health, to get in some exercise and well needed fresh air he also sees it as a benefit for himself where he’s just getting in the extra steps while still enjoying what he loves to do and that is to take care of dogs.
