As of December 1st, all Restricted Free Agents in the NHL must be signed in order to play for the rest of the season. The Maple Leafs still have not re-signed 22-year-old winger William Nylander.

The Leafs now face three options. They can get him under contract before Saturday, trade him to another club willing to meet his salary demands, or simply leave him unsigned and revisit contract negotiations next summer.

Nylander’s offer consisting of a six-year agreement worth around $6.9 million per season is still possible. Elliotte Friedman feels the two sides aren’t far apart, claiming they’re within about half-a-million dollars of each other.”

Jonas Siegel also tweeted what Mike Babcock thinks about the situation:

The Leafs are willing to give Nylander $6-7 million but his agents are pushing for $8 million a year.

Seneca CLT Student, Ghe believes that Nylander still has to prove himself and should not get paid the equivalent of what Leafs star player Auston Matthews is getting paid. He thinks that he should play with the squad a bit longer and then ask for more money, once he has proven himself.

The teams eyeing  Nylander for a possible trade are the Carolina Hurricanes, Minnesota Wild, Anaheim Ducks and the Philadelphia Flyers.

It’s crunch time and all eyes will be on the Toronto Maple Leafs this upcoming weekend.
