Feds Announce $595 Million in Funding For Journalism

By David Sproull

The Federal Government has just announced $595 million dollars in new funding for the journalism industry.

S@Y news host Asante Brown sat down in a round table discussion to explore the implications of this move on Seneca students and beyond.

The funding was announced by Federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau as part of his Fall Economic Update.

The plan includes tax breaks for the creation of new content as well as help for not for profit media outlets to raise money.  On the consumer side there is a 15% tax credit for subscriptions to certain media outlets.

The announcement has been met with cynicism however, especially from conservative circles, claiming that the Trudeau Liberals were doing nothing more than attempting to bribe Canadians with their own money.

Conservative MP Michelle Rempel tweeted the following

You know what, journalists are the victims of the Trudeau Sponsored Content Fund. They’re all going to have to work extra hard to prove their objectivity in an era where everyone is a content creator. RIP free speech.

Conservative pundit Ezra Levant also weighed in on the announcement on his Rebel Media show

While the motives of the Trudeau Government are being questioned, it will be some time before the full effects of this new funding will be felt and the impact these changes will have on Seneca students.
