Ford’s Climate Plan is ‘Made-In-Ontario’

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has released a “Made-In-Ontario‘ Environment plan that is to replace the Liberal government’s Carbon Tax model. But this won’t rid Ontarian’s of paying out. Ontario’s Environmental Minister, Rod Phillips, alluded to this by suggesting the new plan is to strike a balance between, ‘a healthy economy and a healthy environment’.

The new environmental plan aims to keep the emission goals from the Paris Accord– the same goals that the Carbon Tax was created for. The main goal is to reduce carbon emissions by thirty percent from the 2005 levels by 2030.

‘Made-In-Ontario’ is a multi-layered plan with several, mini plans that require large funds to activate.

For a major plank in the plan– called the Carbon Trust– taxpayers will be asked to pay out four-hundred-million over four years, working with private sectors on creating clean technologies to reduce emissions.

Another fifty million is set aside for the ‘Reverse Action Plan’, which is modelled after Australia’s Emission Reduction Fund.

This aims to encourage businesses, farmers and land owners to bid on government contracts to develop environmentally-friendly practises and technologies that produce the lowest ‘cost per tonne’ of greenhouse gas emissions. Essentially, if you decide to operate your business with energy-efficient technology, you will earn carbon credits that you will be able to auction for money later on.

Some main goals are to :

  • Invest in Public Transit
  • Turn to Electric Vehicles
  • Changes to industry-performance standards for big emitters
  • Add 15% more Ethanol into gas

As of currently, the Federal government only approved of the Made-In-Ontario Environmental Plan as a replacement of Trudeau’s Carbon Tax but the finer details haven’t been officially approved.
