Canadian Government Says It Will Stop Contaminated Lettuce from Coming In

By Laura Lira

The Federal government is asking the Canadian food industry not to buy romaine lettuce from parts of the U.S. that might be producing an E.coli-contaminated product. It has also said it will introduce “additional control measures” to make sure that products from those affected areas are not coming into Canada.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration suspects the problem is in the central coast region of California. Canadian health agencies are still conducting their own investigation.

Public Health Canada is advising Canadians to avoid eating romaine lettuce for now

Last week, three more people were contaminated by E.coli in Ontario and Quebec. Public Heath Canada has confirmed 22 cases between October and November. Eight people have been hospitalized, and one person has had serious complications because of the E.coli infection. No one has died.

Public Health Canada says that people should avoid eating romaine lettuce until officials have updates on the outbreak.
