York U Strike Hit and Run

A striking CUPE member has been hit by a car while on the picket line.  It happened at roughly one in the afternoon at the Keele St and The Pond Road entrance.  According to witnesses, a car rushed through the picket line, hitting a man in the process. He was knocked to the ground.

The car then made a U-turn before rushing off back onto Keele Street.

The picketer was not seriously hurt.  He did not want to be identified, but he told senecajournalism.ca that there are rarely problems with drivers.

“This is the problem, 99% of people are patient, it doesn’t characterize the people in the strike.”

Police were not called.

This is not the first incident on the picket line this year.  Last week a fight broke out at the Pioneer Village station picket line. Video was posted of the fight on Youtube, that appeared to be between a driver and an unknown man. The video has since been taken down. Strikers say, it has generally been very peaceful.
