The Sting Feel Like Winners, Despite Losing to the Thunder.

“We put up a good fight” says Seneca’s star player Tiffany McNeil.

Players on Seneca Sting women’s basketball team walked off the court with their heads held high after going up against the undefeated Algonquin Thunder.  The final score on Saturday night was 80 – 66, but despite that, Seneca pushed as hard as they could and kept it close for most of the game.  McNeil had one of her biggest games of the season, scoring 23 points.

“You know it was a tough game for us, we put everything we had into this game and it wasn’t easy. Would we have like to win, yah, for sure, but at the end of the day we gave it our all and that’s all that we can do. I mean I couldn’t ask for a better team, I’m so proud to be with these girls and I’m sad that we didn’t win in the end, but we gave it our all” says McNeil.

The Sting kept missing three pointers and early on weren’t getting any free throws, but their shooting percentage in the first half was still a respectable 42%. The Sting’s Kelly Mcllroy scored 11 points and six rebounds in the first quarter.  More than once in the game the Sting fell behind but rallied back. At the end of the first half it was 38-33 for Algonquin and Thunder head coach Jamie McClean admitted he was surprised at how tough the Sting were.

“You know I have to say we weren’t exactly as prepared as we should’ve been. You know they were a lot harder than we expected, and they put up a good game. But you as opponents we always try and respect them.”

In the fourth quarter the Sting and the Thunder were tied 54-54 as Seneca played tight defence.  Algonquin eventually proved too much for Seneca.  The Sting’s Chelsea Ramsay finished with 19 points and 4 rebounds.

The Sting drop to 2-8 on the season.  Algonquin is now at 9-0.

Although Seneca didn’t get the win, they were happy with how they played and look forward to facing their next opponent.

The Sting’s next game is Friday at Loyalist College in Belleville.
