Excitement, an overwhelming sense of pride, exhaustion, and screams of both joy and stress filled the air. You could feel the athletes pain, and energy; there were cheers from friends, and other competitors as the athletes rushed to complete their challenges, some surprised people with their feats of strength and endurance. The gymnasium had 6 rows of equipment lined up, each with shuttle cones, jump ropes, a box, sandbags and other equipment needed for the competition.

Dozens of people showed up for the event, the competitors, some friends of the competitors, and the event staff, all were full of energy when the competition started. Everyone erupting into cheers of encouragement, the staff yelling, trying to help their athlete to move froward, pushing them on. At the end of the first heat the athletes who finished all seemed exhausted, and after watching what they had to do, i don’t blame them for seeming tired, this event certainly was not for the weak.

This challenge was scheduled for November 19th from 4:30pm to 7:00pm, although due to some participants not showing up it was cut short for a 6:00 finish. To those who showed up it was a tough event, participants went through 10 exercises, Shuttle Run, Box Flip, Box Jump, Push Up, Full Sit Up, Jump Rope, Hurdle Under Over, Squat Jump, Plank Shoulder Touch, and Sandbag Carry.

“There’s a few different heats, and each heat there’s about 5 or 6 people per heat and it’s just basically an obstacle course”, that’s Samantha Vandenheuvel one of the coordinators for the event. She has been working on the Fit Enough Challenge ever since it started, “this is the 3rd or 4th year this has happened, and every year we adjust it based on feedback from students”.

After completing the challenge participants were welcomed to stay for refreshments before staff announced the winners of the competition. The top 3 fastest times were awarded with 3 Sport Check gift cards, 1st place winning $50, 2nd place $40 and 3rd place $30, for both women and men who participated.

As the Fit Enough Challenge is an annual event it will come around again next year, and the organizers ask students to look out for the announcement through Blackboard. If you are interested in the event, click on the link provided in that announcement and follow the instructions provided.
